My leucistic axolotl laid about 300 eggs 12 days ago. She is now swollen and red all over. Any clues as to what is wrong with her? What do I do?
Help!

poor baby...what are the water parameters? Is that gravel smaller than 1mm? If is isnt she could have eaten some.....could you please think about changing it to sand, tiles or even bare bottom.
sorry for the question but they might help working out the cause of her illness.

It is the sand that was recommended. I checked before I set up with my first Axolotl. They have been eating bits of it sometimes with their pellets for years

ok cool. It looked bigger in the photo. I dont know why your girl is swelling but someone will be able to offer advice im sure. I would have a vet picked out just in case. Have you checked the water?
Im just trying to get as much info up so when someone with more experience comes on they will have the info they need.

She looks really stressed. It appears to me that her gills are really far farward in the first picture than compared to the picture before the eggs. Was it her first batch of eggs?

Yes. First batch. She is over 1 year old. The 2 males (now partitioned away from her in the same tank) look just fine.

I'm so sorry. Your poor little Axie. I really don't know what else to say. I'm new to all of this but I'm guessing that you will have to clean out the entire tank now so that the males dont get sick. Personally I would change that sand. It looks quite granually. The sand I use is really fine. Or you could leave the bottom of the tank bare.

My heart goes out to you. I hope your boys will be ok. xxx

Poor lass :(

Really sorry to hear that - sad ending *hugs*

Are you rearing the eggs?

Aw So sorry for your loss :( I wish we could have worked out was wrong to help her :(

I'm sorry to hear about that. :( Poor Axolotl.

Mystery solved. She choked on a tiny minnow feeder fish. One of my kids saw it but didn't realize that was when she started looking so bad. No more feeder fish for my axies. First one died of fungus from feeder goldfish and now this.

Oh dear... Argh, I shouldn't read this forum when I'm feeling all emotional.

I guess that's another couple of good reasons not to have fish around. I'm so sorry for the loss of your girl, maxolot.

Many losses on this forum in a short period of time. I feel really sad now.

Really sorry for your loss, Maxolot..

oh no.....I know your pain. Im so sorry. Enjoy raising her babies and please post some pictures of them.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
