hi i realy need some help i posted a thread on here approx a week and half ago saying that a pleco had sucked on my axoltol called toothless (we were told they would be ok living together) we have since gave the pleco away to a pet shop and i fridged toothless from last thursday as his skin looked like it was peeling (as if he had sunburn but no raw skin). i have kept him in fridge until thursday just gone but he has not eaten and not poo'd so i decided to transfer him back into tank gradually to avoid temp shock. this morning i have checked on him and where he was sucked on by pleco his skin has litterally peeled from his body so it is showing raw flesh. i really need some help and dont know what to do, he had some cotton wol like fungus on him but that has now come off with his skin. i have been told to get some cattappa leaves but none of my pet shops do them and cant advise me where to get them, can anyone tell me where i can get some? i need to know do i carry on salt bathing him? i have put him back in fridge. what about him not eating and pooing? please help i realy dont want him to get any worse. here is some pics from when we first fridged him, a few days ago and today.

this was him when it firsthapened approx week and half ago

If he was my axolotl , I would return him to the fridge. Make sure the water is kept clean and changed regularly. As the wounds cover a large surface I would take him to a vet.
You can get the leaves, or almond leaves through the internet, such as ebay.

this is him a approx 6 days ago

do the cattappa leaves work? can you give me any advice on wether i should still salt bath him?

I wouldn't salt bath him as the wound seems rather raw, it would be very painful for him.
I have used almond leaves to aid healing, but in your case I still feel that the injuries are very big. I personally think this little guy needs a vets help here.

do u know of any vets within the uk that treat axolotl?

thanks ive checked the link and the nearestvet listed is 2 hours drive away, do you think i could ring and they would give me some advice?

It wouldn't hurt to call :) Hopefully they can help

If they know anything about axolotls, they may indeed be able to advise you, though I'm guessing it probably needs a proper examination.
However, they may also be able to advise you of any axie-friendly vets closer to you, so definately worth giving them a ring ;)

Try phoning your local vet and explain what has happened to your axolotl, let them know you have a list of specialist vets that they may wish to confer with if they seem unsure.

Poor little thing, I bet you could just throttle the person who said he would be safe with a pleco!

Like the others have said definitely give it a go with calling around the vets. But also, if you haven't already, and this is assuming you bought your axolotl from a petshop (but could still try anyway even if not), ask your local petshops which vets they use. This is how I found out about the vet I now take my axolotls to!

hi im in sunderland? do you think that his skin may have come off with it being dead skin, do you think it will now grow new skin?

I am no vet but as everyone has said that looks so painful your poor axie :( The dead skin may well fall off but I would think your axie would need some sort or antibiotic to help him through this!

Wish you the best of luck!

i have ordered some cattappa leaves, what do i do with these (just incase they dont come with instructions) and i will ring vets tomorrow

Just to let us all knw we've found a vet that specialises in axolotls about a 40 min drive from us and we have an appointment on Tuesday so we will hopefully get him sorted, we have him in with cattappa leaves at the min do those shud stop him from gtin ny worse in the meantime. with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
