Hey,
I have two axolotls, just over a year old. They're both in the same tank. One is fine, the other however i noticed a few days ago had white cotton wool stuff on it's tail. I put him in a separate tank and have given him 2, ten minute salt baths a day and doing 50 + % water changes every day. The water temperature is normally between 18-20 C.

Today I noticed his tail is red and he was floating on the water. His tips of his gills are white and his mouth/throat is puffy? So are his legs a little bit.

I really don't know what to do now. I have borrowed some Melafix from a friend but not sure whether to use it. Last thing I want to do is make things worse.

HELP PLEASE?? ANY IDEAS. -.-

I saw that no one posted here for some reason. Is there any update sir?

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
