Just wondering if the crests on dobrogicus stay all year round. This male's crest has been high like this since I bought him last year.

No, the crest is only there while the male is in breeding season. The rest of the year, it´s reabsorved.
Maybe your animal is in his first year. Young subadult males can have a pseudo-cycle where they aren´t fully mature but they look like they are trying hard for a long while xD I have a juvenile right now that is in the same condition. Small crest, underdeveloped colors, but with a lot of hope for the future....

I've had mature males stay at half crest from season to season!! It's just another animal kingdom why, like why do some female marmoratus crest. Why do some female deer grow antlers??

it's kinda like the bearded lady in the circus - it's hormonal, at least in mammals. A tumor on the adrenal gland that cranks out androgens will do that. I don't know if it works that way in amphibians though

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
