The Wolterstorff Index (WI) is a measure of body shape, mostly used for crested newts (Triturus).
It is calculated as 100 times the length of the front leg, divided by the length of the body (between front and hind legs). Low values indicate a slender, short-legged animal; high values a stout, long-legged animal. As different crested newt species have different ranges of values, this index has been useful for identification. |
