One of my babies was born this way? Is its tail bent or does it have a broken back?

Its seems to be growing and eating...

I was told it would drop its tail and grow another but I am not so sure.. What should I do?

It does not seem to swim very well, but I cant bring myself to cull it!

P.S. Sorry about the picture, dropped my camera in the tank..

That's a spinal deformity. It should've been culled when it was much smaller.

Axolotls don't drop their tails. You would have to amputate it. But that isn't going to fix the problem.

Do spinal deformities cause pain in the Axolotl?

Granted I know in a human it would probably be very unpleasant, but I don't know the biology of Caudata too much.

If no, sure in the wild it would have probably been thinned out by now, but in captivity I don't see why it can't be kept because of an aesthetic deformity.

If yes, there is a thread on here somewhere about euthanasia. :(

Hi i dont know about the best way to kill it but if its isnt suffering i dont see a problem with keeping it. Might not be able to sell it. I have a fish who is deformed and lives a happy life and is quite a character!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
