Hi everybody!
Everything had been going swimmingly but unfortunately a couple of months ago i noticed that the back of one side of my axolotls gills was paler and just assumed at the time it was just colouring but when i turned the light on in the tank to move some decorations around i had a closer look and saw that it looks more like a growth (Im hopeing it isnt what im thinking it could be)!
Im not sure if it has got any larger during this time.
I have checked the water which is fine as usual and his behaviour and appetite havent changed.
So i was wondering if anyone has seen and knows what it could be or has any ideas?
Thanks.

Maybe a fungus ?

Check out the salt bath tutorial. :) There's also a picture of an axolotl with fungus in there, does it look like that ?

Axolotls, much like any other animal, can get weird little growths. If it starts to change size/shape/color, I would consult a vet. But if it doesn't otherwise bother your little dude, just keep an eye on it.

I will certainly keep a close eye on it for any changes.
I wonder if it goes in any further as it seems to be coming out of the gap (not sure of the correct term for that) behind the gills but as long as it isnt affecting him swallowing etc then i thought i would be better of leaving it alone for now.
I feel better for getting a second opinion. Thank you.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
