Illness/Sickness: Weird "shed" on my axie...?

Hey, i just recently got my axie and he seems pretty happy but I've noticed that sometimes he starts to shed or something along the lines of that, like it looks like the outer layer of skin or smthn is coming off then when he moves it comes off him and floats around in the water...

Is this a fungus??

Ohh and he's a 5 month old male...

it almost seems as though it is his slime coat that is shedd (i read about a slime coat here on the forums)

How warm is your water? What kind of food are you offering? What kind of substrate do you have? Do you test your water parameters? Is there anything rough in the tank that your axolotl can scrape against?

I live in a pretty warm country (Hong Kong) but i do my best to maintain his water temp between 20-16. The substrate is small pebbles (bigger than he's able to swallow though) and they arent very sharp... although he does have a barrel ornament which he sleeps in which isnt extremely rough but its not smooth either... I feed him newt pellets because getting bloodworms here is a hassle and i tested the pH yesterday and it was 1.6-1.7.

I just thought about smthn, ive been changing abt 25% of the water every second day for the last while but i dont fully let the water cool to the same temp as the tank water :/ should i?

Also, i dont know if its related but the water is slightly cloudy (i do have a filter though and i do remove the feces with a siphon when i change the water)

You say theres a filter in your tank, has it been cycled? A tanks filter should be adequate enough to cope with its bioload (waste) and once cycled water changes should not need to be that frequent. I would get your water parameters (ammonia and nitrites especially) checked asap x

Hey! I'm from Hong Kong as well and i agree it's been pretty warm lately. My axies had fugus before but fridging and salt baths helped it a lot. Right now my axies live in my room under my air conditioner and i have a fan for them to cool the water down.

I have my axie under aircon too because it was just getting too hot for him...
i gotta let my filter cycle like most people have been saying

AHAHHAHA. I kinda figured, is he ok now? I keep my axies in my room cause i can't stand the heat either :p under air con.

    Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

    Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
