I have a c.orientalis and I was wondering how old he was, I've had him for about a year but I'm not sure of age. He is about 8cm long (including tail), any help would be great:happy.
:)

It's not possible to tell how old your newt is, but with 8 centimeters he (or probably a she) is an adult. I know someone who's got some animals which he has kept for almost thirty years. They're pretty big, but they don't lay eggs anymore. They can live for many years, so you can probably enjoy your newt for a long time.

I have one that was an adult when I bought him back in 1997. Who knows how old he is? But shows no signs of slowing down.

Nice, 15+ years! Do you know for sure that he's C. orientalis, not pyrrhogaster?

i have one female who is 17 her mother lived with me for 22 years and was an adult when I got her

They laid eggs right up to approx 14 years of age the mother, I suspect she was blind for her last two years. From a full batch of eggs at aged 13 her daughter only had a hatch rate of 40%

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
