So I have two empty 40 gallon breeder tanks just sitting in my basement staring at me. I can't decide what to put in them. I'm just looking for suggestions. I already have axolotls so I'm looking to branch out. They could be either aquatic or terrestrial and preferably they would prefer colder temperatures.

Pleurodeles waltl(Spanish ribbed newts) have a lot of personality, and can be fun to watch. You don't need to have a land area since they wouldn't use it, unless the water quality is bad.

Something that doesnt have gills! Get some crested newts, or some crocodile newts! Kaiseri are cool too if you can get some for a decent price.

With a tank of that size a group of Triturus dobrogicus would be a lot of fun. Pretty much any species you could want will do best in a cool setup so you really have a ton of options.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
