New icons

Any thoughts on the new forum folder icons (on the main topics page)? I know some people didn't like the old ones. Are these better?

I thought the original icons were fine but the newer ones look good to me too. I'm (personally) not too picky .

Personally I do not like the animated icons, they are way too busy. I had people complaining about the icons on our forum too, but it turns out people do not like changes, and it just takes time for them to get used to it. The best solution is to use just 2 icons, old and new, grey and colored, what your taste might be.

The simple solution is mostly the best. When I go to a forum I just quickly want to see which messages are new.

I like them as they are clearer to see what I haven't read..I tend to pop in a fair few times during the day and i've found the new symbols great.

I'm not really a fan of these new icons at all, they are just too large and busy. I would agree that animated icons are just not a very good choice.

Plus, even though they are animated, it is still unclear too see at once which forums contain new messages.

Just a normal icon with difference in color will do in my opinion.

I agree, that would be best. Or just bring the icons of the old forums back, these are just too much.

I waited a few days to answer, to see if I would get used to them. It's nice to have some indication of read/unread, but I think these are too large and flashy. I would suggest something a little less vibrant.

I agree with the two colors. Maybe dull gray for 'no new' and green for 'new'.

Can't you use RSS for that? Anyhow, you're a MAC user, you're supposed to want eye candy - style over substance remember? ;P

Seriously though, with regard to it being slow, I deliberately make the images quite small in kb. The big images are from users rather than the site's own images.

A personal opinion: I really do not like these ones. The yellow/orange tint seems random (even though it's probably from the C in the Caudata.org logo), and the font is more something I want to see in a newspaper. "NEW! Material" is more information than I need, just a subtle "new" would do, everyone is aware they are visiting a forum that contains old and new posts. I'd say: K.I.S.S! (Keep It Simple, Stupid, the most valuable lesson I had in design classes.)

I don't want to offend anyone but this is my honest argumentation.

I like these new icons too...but for the school-bus get-your-sunglasses color. Aren't we a bunch of whining complainers after all you do!!

I think these are the best by far. Very straight forward and not too showy.

I happen to like the "old" new icons. They are not really that distracting, and the animation makes it easy to see which sections you have not looked at recently.

The "new" new icons are fine as well.

I contemplated writing a mock suicide note in this message but I don't think that would be well received (and not everyone has my poor taste in humour). I will attempt to design another set of icons that pleases everyone (except Alan Cann - his standards are too high).
