i wanted to ask if somebody can help me with my axolotl. I think he has red leg. His tail, hands, and feet have red spots. I wanted to attempt the salt bath method, but I am afraid to do it because I don't know how to. I went to the nearest fish shop, wanting to buy salt and the person attending us said that he recommended putting him in water with Methylene blue drops. He is only a baby axolotl, he has a tank mate, luckily the tankmate only has one small dot on this mouth. At the moment, he is in a small plastic ''bowl'' and his tank-mate is in another one next to him. if you need a photo just ask

here are some pics of him in his tank. before we moved him, we had to take everything out incase something had the fungus.

okay so there’s definitely something very wrong here, i suggest talking them to an exotic vet asap.

Ok, but do you know any other way that I can help him?
I don't exactly know where I can find one where I am at the moment. Do you think that salt baths can help?

if there is no other way, I will look for an exotic vet.

we put some drops of Methylene blue in the water he is currently in, and the fungus seems to have faded just a little.

i think this is a bad case of ammonia poisoning, from what i know. it could be something else, but i think it is water quality related - keep him tubbed with dechlorinated water with 100% changes every day, keep using meth. blue and i suggest tea baths to helm soothe the skin. other than than, rush him to a vet.

ok, thank you so much. Last question, What do I need to give him a tea bath?
get black tea bags, ensure they are just tea and nothing else (no flavoring, etc)
brew several bags in one cup, let is sit in the fridge for a while until it’s cold enough, then add dechlorinator to the tea solution and pour into a tub large enough for the axolotl, place him inside and let him stay there for at least 30 minutes

i’m looking for my care guide instructions, they’re much better, hold on

procedure

first, either find or go out and buy some black tea bags. ensure that the only ingredient in the tea is the actual tea leaves - no flavoring or anything of the sort. then, prepare two bags of tea per cup, using either a microwave or boiling water.
after the tea has brewed, allow it to steep for about ten minutes. afterward, place it into the fridge or freezer to cool, as axolotls require cool waters.
when finished cooling, either introduce the axolotl to a tub with dechlorinated water and the tea treatment, or pour the tea treatment into the tank.

for a salt bath, the procedure is much more risky. this should only be done if tea treatments are failing to reduce the infection. i would suggest either researching this on caudata or making a post asking how.

i’d also like to see the other axie- they both (at least the one i’ve seen) need a vet immediately but tea treatments may help soothe the skin. it looks like a bad case of ammonia burn to me

it is water quality, the tank was left in my patio, and every 2-3 days the water would start to turn green. I tried to clean it every few days, then I got very busy and forgot. About 5 days after I changed it, the water was VERY green I rushed to clean it and I took the top off and saw my axolotl and thought the other one was eating it, as it always picks at it. but then I took both out and they were both very alive. i read about salt baths. I have moved the tank and it seems to be a lot better than before I also bought a new filter.

ok give me a moment to send it. i was reading online and saw that the cause of the water turning green was of so much light, and nutrients. ( the other axie only has a small dot on its mouth.)

they should be inside, separated, and both treated immediately. frankly, i think it would honestly be best to surrender your animals to someone who’s a bit more knowledgeable about them - vet is needed immediately as well
axolotls require 60 degree water, and definitely should not be outside or anywhere in which it is warm enough for algae to form

i agree, they are inside separated and both are being treated :) I am finishing up an essay, so I wont be sending pics for another 15-20 mins. just give me a couple of mins.

what are your parameters?
temp?
substrate?
water conditioner?
im genuinely worried for the lives of these animals, i don’t know if they're going to recover or survive without professional care immediately. i think that letting it get this far was also a mistake, but appreciate your bravery in posting about it anyways. i’m frustrated, but not entirely at you, i hope you understand. i’m rambling. oh well. i just feel that these animals should either have a dramatic change in the way they are cared for or should otherwise be surrendered.

I completely understand. They are living in a colder and darker room at the moment. They have no substrate in their tank, it is bare bottom. in the photo I sent you you can see colorful sand, this is not inside the tank it is under the glass tank. The temp is 18 C.

To de-chlorinate their water, we use the seachem prime fresh/salt conditioner. it is a chemical remover/detoxifier as said on the bottle. i will be sending the pic of the other axolotl now.

If they do not seem to be better tomorrow, then I will rush them to the vet. Do you have any tips, on what I should be feeding them?

They currently eat small fish, I also have food pellets but they seem to only like meat now. The person who attended me at the fish shop also had an axolotl. The person said they eat meat as well. is it safe to feed them meat..?
