Thanks aaustin15 its sand on earth. I used the method in the book 'The Ecology of the Planted Aquarium' by Diana Walstad . It takes about 2 months to get the soil stable (and befor you can put any newts in) but once set up its really easy to maintain . I think my newts are happy. Its well worth a read also the plats grow like mad.
that is so cool. when i get more space I'm going to get a larger tank and try that! i hate only having the sand because i can't grow anything. i have to put them in pots, as you've seen from my album ):
Actually looking at stud he is quite big. My newts don't dig up the substrate but if they did it would be a real mess. If stud / paddle tail newts dig up the substrate it might be better to stick with the pots. Otherwise it could be a real pea souper in the tank. : )
