That axolotl has the longest gills I've seen. Could it be genetic?

I believe it's water conditions (temperature, DO content, possibly water chemistry). All axolotls I've raised from eggs under the same conditions end up with long gills. Doesn't matter if they're related or not.

That axie has beautiful gills! I wonder if he would be willing to share them with my poor Rover He has such small gills.
You say it is to do with the conditions.. details about the temp/chemicals and such in water?

Conditions (sorry for late reply - didn't spot the comment): Warm water (around 24 degrees Celsius but not higher than this), pH was in the early 7s (7.4 if I recall correctly), relatively soft water, presence of an air stone, and water not deeper than a few inches until large.

Hi John,

great picture, i am very impressed too, by the size of the gills. can a 1 1/2 yr old axy still grow gill like this under similar water conditions?
