The first specimen of the batch of animals which I keep from eggs has entered the water at the age of 40 months and size of 10 cm.

Beautiful, Juraj!

What happened with your experiment in raising P. hongkongensis aquatically? I remember a photo you posted many months ago. Did that work in the long-run?

Jenn : here is that thread http://www.caudata.org/forum/showthread.php?t=42627&highlight=hongkongensis+aquatic+juveniles. More than a half died within a few days and the rest died later though they were removed in terrestrial setup. I have no idea if it was aqutic rearing what killed them or some disease. In any case those which I`ve been keeping terrestrialy have no problems.
Sam : It will take him another two or three years to reach full maturity and females probably more.

Thank you for the link, Juraj.

The animal in the photo above looks sexually mature (large cloaca + tail stripe). He may be small, but I would say that he is fully mature already.

Yes it looks like mature but according to my previous observations he will lose his breeding dress much more earlier than older males. In december and january when breeding season culminates he will be out.

Great pics Juraj-well done! I can see my lot have a long way to go!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
