I recently acquired a group of 5 L.v.vulgaris. It´s 4 males and 1 female. They arrived starved and dehydrated after a seven days long trip....but they are now looking much better. The female is fully recovered, and the males vary a bit, but they are putting on some weight. I´m feeding them earthworms and waxworms, the first to keep them nutritionally fed, and the second to make them gain some fat.
They are extremely shy, and at first it was very tricky to get them to eat because even the movement of the prey scared them off...but now they are getting a bit bolder and they eat very well.
I hope to be able to get some decent pics sometime this week, though they are not the most stunning animals now that they are terrestrial. I think they are brilliant though, and when they become aquatic i´m prepared to be min-blowed!

Four males fighting for the attention of one female next year then Rodrigo.

It´s going to be one annoyed female. I originally asked for two males and two females, but i received the 4.1 group. I´m quite pleased though, the males are beautiful even on land. And the female looks so much like a Lissotriton helveticus, that i feel like i´m a kid looking for newts in my village´s river again :) Ahh...good times.

I was finally able to take some proper photos. I only took a couple pics of two of the males, i hope to get more of the whole group.
I picked these two males because they are very different between them and show how variable a species can be.
Hope you like....

Beautiful newts Rodrigo! Good luck breeding them this year. Hopefully you can raise up some female offspring to add to your colony;)

Thanks, i really hope so xDD
They are aquatic now, and even though it´s way too early, my ill mind is starting to see signs of crests xD

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
