I bought some clay pots and plate to break and use for hiding spots. When I broke one if half, it was different in the middle!? Now I am worried about what it is, is it safe? If anyone could help me out, that would be great. I am going to wash it and soak it in water before putting it in the tank. Thanks!

It is probably just filler clay. It couldnt be glaze because it is not shiny, and glass. It could be ongobe, which is just colored clay but most likely it is just natural red clay. I wouldnt worry about it.

hi

All the clay pots i have ever broken to put in tanks have looked like that inside, its perfectly fine, just was the pot off just to make sure no contaminants are on the surfaces.

The one in my fire salamanders vivarium looks like this. It's never had any issues but i never did think to check.

I just wanted to make sure that was clay instead of other material (that could cause a problem). I washed them, then I going to soak them 24 hours. Thanks for the clearing that up for me!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
