Well, today I went back to gravel in the bare bottom tank. Almost instantly I noticed a big change in the paddle tails. They were really active, checking out their new carpeting and chasing eachother around. One of my main males likes to snipe other tank mates from above. He sits in the hornwort and watches them, when they get close he flys down and chases them. This evening, when he flew down, he started shaking his tail right in front of the big girl. I have only seen this once before with him. Unfortunately, she wanted nothing to do with it and eventually swam away. His dance didn't go unnoticed as another girl saw it, and swam right up to him putting her face in his cloaca area. He would slowly circle a flowerpot with her bumping his curled tail and following. They did about four laps and it looked like he dropped around three sperm packets. One I could see was stuck to her inside back leg, and two in the gravel. Here are a few pics of the action:

Wow that is really amasing that your paddletails are mating already. Darn if only I had so much luck!
Despite your female taking the packets in, she may not actually lay fertilised eggs straight away if ever. Still, this is great news. Keep us updated!

A couple nights ago the same female and male were at it again. She was bumping his tail around the tank for 20 minutes or so. This time I noticed she actually caught a spermatophore in the right spot! Sorry for the pic, but all I had was my phone on me at that time.

That is good news - I hope its successful. Could you tell us more about your setup, like temps and water depth, and how long you have had these animals, and how long they have been housed together - anything that may shed some light on what the females cues are to breed.

Thorninmyside:Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation+1
