Showing off the 'Lotls

Rikkoshaye:
Interesting! Any indication as to whether it was or wasn't skin that he was going to shed? Did he have any other lighter patches?

Rayson:
I'm not sure. I didn't notice it before. I also didn't notice his white throat patch at first. (Perhaps I wasn't very observant; he did hide quite a lot for the first month or so after I got him.)

The throat patch and arm patches haven't changed/disappeared at all since I noticed them. Perhaps the back is a different case, and it is indeed skin he will shed (sounds pretty reasonable to me, though I might be secretly wishing he ends up with stripes...haha). We'll see I guess.

Upon inspection of older pictures, it would appear the limb "stripes" have always been there. However, his throat patch seems to have become more defined. But I think the skin on his underside was still not as opaque then as there is some red on one photo I have that shows his belly.
For direct comparison: (attached) The older picture might have been slightly washed out by the flash. But I do think he was somewhat lighter there when he was younger.
He was around 3" when I got him. Now he is 5".

Pretty confident its a pigmentation rather than skin shedding.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
