I have finally moved Aki, Yoshi, Hiro and Naoko into a large tank. They seem very happy in it. Aki joined the rest in the water after refusing to leave land in the small vivarium they lived in until now. The water is about 4 inches on the deeper side but I will gradually a a few inches.
I was quite surprised that they actually like hanging around or directly on the filter (Fluval mini).
The lid had some holes in it which I sealed with some duct tape. For ventilation i made a lid to fit the original lid hole using some net-like fabric and velcro (stitched to the fabric and stuck to the lid)

He're some photos:

Hey Evut,
That sure is fun! Glad the kids enjoy the new set up! It took me a couple seconds to figure out where the background begins and ends with the real tank. The materials look the same. Kinda gives it a deeper effect.

I would encourage you to raise the water level, they sure will like it. Also, mine LOVE plants, and spend almost all their time hanging on the plants. They seem to like them wven more than C.orientalis, so your animals would probably apreciate it if you provided an area that´s heavily planted.

I like your creative solutions for allowing ventilation while sealing the openings in the tank lid.

Hi, thanks for your comments.
There are actually quite a few plants and 2 moss balls. They are growing well so there should be more vegetation soon.
I am particularly pleased with the plant Ludwigia Mullertii (Red L.) which is growing fast and looks really nice (first picture). The newts love it and can become pretty much invisible in it.
Japanese cress (Cardamine lyrata, 2nd photo front) on the other hand doesn't seem very newt-proof. They keep pulling it out and yesterday I actually saw one of the newts eating its leaves!!!

I'm probably going to add some more water this weekend. I wanted to allow the newts to get used to more water gradually as they had been in a very small and shallow set up until now.
