So, here is my very first axolotl. I love his/her freckles! I just snapped a few pictures with my phone so please excuse the poor quality! The glass could do with a clean as well, I think. S/he seems very happy at the moment, gorges him/herself every feeding time and loves to play in the evenings. XD

Hopefully I can borrow my mother or father's camera at some point to take some nicer pictures of Izel and his/her tank. I still don't know if s/he's a boy or a girl. I don't really have any side-on pictures to upload but if you can tell Izel's sex from these pictures then I'd love to know!

I mainly feed him/her frozen bloodworms, which Izel seems to absolutely adore! I gave him/her a few worms from the garden yesterday (so I guess they were earthworms?) but S/he was, surprisingly, not very keen on them. She had the first one really quickly but didn't much feel like the others. Maybe s/he was just a bit full as I couldn't resist the urge to give him/her a little bedtime snack of half a cube of bloodworms the night before.

I adore his/her freckles! S/he is about 15cm at the moment but growing fast! I've added another picture that I took today just 'cause s/he was giving me a cute facial expression and I couldn't resist snapping it. XD

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
