Hi, I was wondering what kinds of shelves people here use for their tanks.
I am now getting a second tank and it's probably not going to be the last one...:D
For space reasons I don't want to use cabinets.
My problem is that regular furniture isn't sturdy enough and I don't want anything that looks too industrial... Any ideas where to look?
Thanks!

I often rely on those wrought iron looking tank stands, if not furniture.

I'm not sure what you're talking about, jclee... could you post a picture or describe it?
Thanks Eva

Actually i was just looking at industrial shelving units on the internet and I think I know what you mean.

Lusiwarrior... I hate that link! Makes me soooo jealous :)

I use a lot of chrome baker style shelving units. They just snap together and can hold a heavy load.

I too use the restaurant style shelving that Michael describes. Come to think of it, most of my critter room furniture was purchased from one of those restaurant wholesale stores. I have a few heavy duty tables I use also I got at an auction after a Taco Shop closed down..:p

I've let them made myself of aluminium. It's very strong, but also very expensive.

I designed a rack in steel tubes (galva) which I painted 3 times.
For the shelves I used waterproof multiplex (used for formwork for concrete elements)

I had the same problem when trying to make room for my tanks. I was recommended this website by a dealer: www.bigdug.co.uk. The racks can take very large weights, and look surprisingly smart. They are also very easy to attach lights to, and easy to assemble. They work out a huge amount cheaper than cabinets, stands etc.

I purchased a plastic industrial shefl/rack from Home Depot and I love it. It holds 3 10gallon tanks sideways with a total of 5 shelves so it holds 15 10 gallon tanks.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
