Hello caudata!

I am a 5 year axolotl keeper and a brand new axolotl farmer. i had two male axolotls that we got as a family 1st pet 5 years ago. they were fine until i went away to australia for a month and returned to find that one had died (i am the main minder, my surrogate FAILED). the remaining one looked depressed and lonely, and to honor the fallen brother, i thought to get the remaining guy a girlfriend.

when we put her in the tank, our remaining axolotl did the axie dance, but she wasn't interested. months pass, and nothing seems to change. then one day i felt the water and noticed that it was unusually warm. it turns out that the other axolotl had most likely died from the filter which was heating the tank. and when we removed the filter, in two days the whole tank was covered in eggs.

it being my 1st time raising axolotls, i wanted to give me self the best chance of taking some to adulthood, so i ignored the advice to "cull the flock" (somewhat naively). there were 250 eggs. out of 250 eggs around 150 hatched. out of 150 i have about 100 left now, as trial and error plus whatever genetic defects (supranatural selection) weeded it out to those with what i call "the will to live".

now things are going alright. it's still an experiment, and a learning activity as to how to sustain them. i hand feed them live brine shrimp by pipet, which is labor intensive. i can't wait for them to get to the water puppy looking stage. and i can't wait to stop having to hatch brine shrimp!

i had twins! they were the first to hatch and from the same egg. only this morning, one of the twins was dead. this sucks, as i thought they were going pretty well. they were the "oldest" (first hatched) and healthiest looking ones, so i must have done something wrong with them. i had kept them in isolation from the rest of the colonies. but this morning i found one with a bubble in its belly, face down in the water.

there was another "twin" but its egg mate was nothing more that plasma/miasma by the time it hatched. i think that one is okay still. it's hard to tell 100+ axolotls apart.

anyway, i'm here to share my experiences and gain insights from and with you amphibianites!

:ufo:

greetings!
