(sorry about the tread title i don't know how to change it)
my name is Emilie I'm from the UK.
i have wanted an axolotl since i was like 4 i saw one on children s TV program, The Sooty Show. They were showing axolotls amongst other various animals from some zoo so i just assumed tht they weren't meant to be pets until recently i saw an ad in my local paper selling baby axolotls.
i was then hell bent on having one and did as much research as i could. i had also had my appendix removed at the same sort of time so i had a little project going to keep my occupied whilst getting better and i was so excited.

i bought a second hand tank 3ft long for £40 and its in great nick. I'm obsessed with purple so my chosen substrate for the tank is plum paddle stones which i got from a garden center. i thought this would be a good idea for an axie as I've heard they eat gravel and sand occasionally, also i figured it would be easier to clean as they are large stones and also safe as they have rounded edges.
i got some pink plastic plants as well which look really funky and for places to hide my axies have a plastic tree root and a large piece of slate supported by other large stones (couldn't find a cave big enough)

i originally had one axie to start with which i have called Ethel and then my mum bought a second one because she was worried it would get lonely.

i accidentally over fed Ethel wen i first had her because I'm an idiot but now i only feed them little bits at a time until they look full because they will just keep on eating

i love them very much they're the cutest things I've ever seen.
we haven't got a name for the other 1 yet although we keep calling it a he rather than an it
.

Re: helloo

Welcome to the forum. You have started very well by avoiding the gravel. Axolotls do not seem to be too fussy what colour their surroundings are and they will be fine with pink and purple. Do do regular changes of part of the water and ask for help to make sure the tank filters are working properly so the axolotl is not poisoned by the ammonia waste they make from digested food.

Enjoy your pets! Don't worry about the title, axolotl experts are usually friendly and only occasionally wrong.

Welcome to the forum. The tank looks very nice and comfortable for the axies. The only thing I would caution you about is that uneaten food may fall down amongst the stones. Rotting food will do terrible things to the water quality (worse than poop), so you may want to take some precautions, either with how you feed them, or with cleaning immediately after feeding.

I got an axolotl a couple of days ago and i started off with large rocks like those but my water was filthy after the first night so changed to small rock that are small enough for him to digest if he happens to eat them. I was also advised by the pet store that because they are blind they shouldnt have statues and only a couple of plastic plants in the tank because it can harm their skin if they bump into them

well the rocks i used are slate they are fish friendly and don't let any minerals into the water i also scrubbed them before i put them in so any little bits of rock dust were gone.
i was too worried about anything smaller when i bought my baby axies home they were already pooping out gravel from the shop :( not good

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
