As requested a few more details on our marbled newts...

We started with Ballard about 1 1/2 years ago...as complete amateurs...
...since then we've tried our best to learn all we can about marbled newts...and we now have four newts (there were 5 at one point.)

...Ballard and Virginia are our oldest two...and are about the same size (without subjecting them to getting them out of the tank and measuring them I'd say they are about 6 inches long...and quite fat looking!)

...The two smaller ones; Billy-pinter and Dunya are much less bulky...but we rescued them from a pet shop where they were so thin you could see all their bones...we've had them around 6 months...and they're much bigger and healthier than at first, but still haven't reached the size of the other two...

..We have kept them all terrestrially so far...but have just moved them into a tank with 1/3 water...which they have yet to get into...

When we bought the two little ones they were kept in water in the pet shop...but I think they were very juvenile...thin...and not really enjoying the water at all...so we don't want to rush them in...

They all seem quite dark in colouration...especially Dunya who was almost all jet black when we got her, but is now a bit more speckled green...but we're worried we have not been giving them a varied enough diet...so we're ordering in some more food, and wonder if they'll get brighter with better food...or if they're just naturally dark green...

We have also noted that none of them really have the vibrant red stripe you seem to see on all other marbled newts...they have small patches of red on their stripe...but nothing that really stands out...so we wonder if they're all the same sex...though we hope not...we'd like to breed them in the future....

Oh...and 2 of them are missing toes on their back limbs...I only noted this recently...but it doesn't look fungal so I am not too overly concerned and the moment...

We think they all have different personalities...

We have accidentally conditioned them to like shiny things...by feeding them with silver forceps...they now following rings on our fingers...and watch the lap-top with us...

I will try and add some photos of them and their new tank...

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
