Does anyone have any good photos of gravid eastern newts? I think mine might be..... So I put a lot more vegetation in and have been feeding her more... but I have not seen a gravid eastern newt before, and am not sure she is just not chubby....

Here is a picture of one of my gravid females. Generally, they look chubby right above the back legs (pear-shaped).

I would recommend finding some bacopa to put in your tank for egg deposition. Elodea works well, but bacopa has larger leaves and the newts tend to favor laying eggs on them. I put two 15" strands at a time in with mine and remove/replace them every week to let the eggs hatch. This year I've only done it twice and already have 60+ larvae! I have to halt production already!

Are frozen daphnia, and live hydei flies okay food for the babies you think?

That is good because I think I have bacopa and eel grass. I got the bacopa, if that is what it was because it looked like it had more room for egg laying!

I tried frozen dafnia on larvae without success. Frozen bloodworms seems to work perfectly. Those flies will be great to feed your babies when they come to land.

The larvae will need tiny live, aquatic foods, like Daphnia or baby brine shrimp. They won't be able to eat frozen foods until they get bigger.

I'd say gravid, but you should feed her better. She's pretty slim for a gravid female... she needs some earthworms!

'She' looks a little like a 'he' to me. Do you have any better shots of her back legs? My male can look gravid when he's well fed. Either way, it doesn't look particularly thin to me.

The larvae will be tiny, like, a few mm in length, so hydei will be too big for them. Plus, they won't be able to catch food that doesn't stay in the water column. You could try chopping live blackworms into tiny pieces, but full-size blackworms will also be too big for new larvae to eat.

I will get to fattening her! I am pretty sure that she is a girl cause the other two are thinner and have ridgier tales, and HUGE cloacas! hahah and have caught the alleged males on top of, or trying to initiate amplexus....

It is good to know about the live black worms.... those are readily available... and the frozen bloodworms too.... We'll see.....thanks for advice.....

Yeah, now I'd say girl :D Sorry, she has big feet for a lady! From the side, though, she doesn't look very gravid.

Also, males will amplex anything.

Okay... I think she might be laying eggs!

I took the advice about having more females, and got three more females, but they are separate for now.. and probably wont be ready to breed until next year..... So I am blessed with three new newtlings!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
