Ok so after running my new tank and cycling it for a few weeks, I finally went out today and bought a new axie for it.

I first went to my LFS, but I didn't like the look of the 2 they had there, a wild type and a albino living in a tank with pebbles and so I left them, despite feeling bad for them.

I visited a local aquarist, and he had a big golden female he was looking to re home, it is already over a year and a half old and has also successfully had 1 batch of eggs, so 10 minutes and $20 AUD later, I have myself a very fine golden axie.

she was kept very well, in a large, chilled tank at 19 degrees, with a bare bottom and plenty of hides and fed on earthworms and so she is rather plump and has a big rounded belly.

I also obtained 3 java fern, 2 for my axie tank and 1 for the old axie tank, which now houses 11 white cloud minnows which I hope to breed as feeder fish.

so below are pictures of my newest addition(s) to my menagerie, and my re-tooled minnow tank. sorry for the orientation of the pictures, I can't seem to get them to rotate the correct way, next time I will start using my camera to take the photos and not my iPhone.

also, she needs a name! any suggestions would be great.

thanks mere, I got the java fern from avid aquaria, also were I got my newest axie. I got the white clouds from gosnells aquariums and ponds. now I just need to wait for the big twisted piece of driftwood I have to become waterlogged, so I can add it to my axie tank and attach some java fern to it.

Ha! Without offending anyone, I love the way the 2nd photo is upside down + you're from "Down Under" :D

Very pretty ;)
I can't help with names though, as my 2 goldens are still un-named, despite having them for almost 1 year

lol, you're not wrong there. she is currently in a hide, but im thinking maybe in a month or so I get her a friend, (she has a 25 gallon tank to herself) but I don't want eggs everywhere so it will have to be a girl.

Congratulations, Chris! What a beautiful axolotl, she sounds healthy and like she's had a great start in life.

Dunno about a name though, I struggled enough with mine! Have you any thoughts so far?

Oh, btw: Couple of work-arounds for the iPhone photo thing:

1. Photoshop express is free from the app store and will let you rotate images, or,
2. Full screen the picture, rotate your iPhone and take a screen capture (press and hold your home button, then press the sleep/wake key - a screen capture will be saved to your camera roll).

thanks for the iPhone tips mewsie, I had never thought about using the screenshot function! I have photoshop express but never use it on my iPhone, I find it very handy to have on my iPad 3G though.

I plan on keeping her healthy, the way she is now, she was snapping at the bubbles from the airstone a moment ago so I assume she's hungry, so I will feed her some earthworms later, as much as she will take.

Ours snap at bubbles, or anything they think they see moving, I think its instinct rather than actual hunger, so I'd probably just feed her as normal if her tummy is looking nice and chubby.

I've had my iPad for about 7 months now, and its great to take to polytechnic instead of a actual laptop (I also have a macbook air as a portable), and being a mac user I would never settle for a netbook. I can't see me upgrading anytime soon, I don't even use facetime and only use my iPhone's camera to take pictures of the pets. I may get my mum one for her 50th birthday which is soon, she can then stop using mine all the time!

so you work in apple retail? if so, that makes me jelly.

I know its instinct for them to snap at anything that moves, the supplier I got her from fed her daily, and I want to try and keep that routine, atleast for a little while until she gets settled.

Nice gift!

I never use FaceTime either tbh, same with the camera, it's full of axolotl pictures! love my iPad to bits, browsing the web on my laptop seems so slow and annoying now!

Corporate... I am a trainer with the Apple Sales Training Academy ^_^ Most of my delegates are resellers, rather than Apple retail. Brilliant, brilliant job, absolutely love every minute of it.

Bless ^_^ She did well being chosen by you!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
