Finally, after months of having the 4ft tank and having nothing in it, its finished (for now)!
Gem decided to see how far she could swim and seemed very happy with all the room :D
Here are some pics from my crappy mobile phone camera.

gem is a lucky axie. Great new house she has there.

Thanx
I'd love to paint the pipe green or something to make it blend in better, but I'm not sure if it would be safe to do so. Also, I want to get her a moss ball and she needs something high, as I noticed her trying to get a bit higher up the tank today.

I wouldn't advise painting the tube green, it might harm your axies.

May I suggest lowering the water level, the level should be as high as the axie is long.

The water level is perfect, the higher the water level is, the easier it is to maintain temperature

The water level is ok that high, it only need be as high as the axie is long, but the lakes they are originally from would be far deeper :)

As Michael says, the more water, the easier it is to maintain temperature, and also general water parameters. My lot make full use of all the space they have, swimming about and clambering over tall plants and stuff :)

Agreed, painting could be ropey, but how about getting a load of moss and tying it to it? You could even get a mesh to lay over the pipe to hold the moss down. That'd look wicked, and you get the benefit of the moss being there too, if you've got the pennies :)

I put lots of water in it, because I heard that the water perimeters are easier to manage
Gem doesnt seem to mind, she makes full use of the room, although she likes sitting on top of the filter, right at the top :p
So, I need to get a new air pump thingy and some moss  Love the moss idea! Thanx! :D I was thinking of getting a moss ball anyway, so I'll just get a little extra to make one ;) Now, where to get moss. . .

I may be wrong but is that pebbles in the plant things on the bottom of the plants? If so remove them asap and use sand

Yeah, I've been keeping an eye on them, but I will remove them today. I just dont know what else to use to keep the plants down, as those 2 plants have these stupid plastic bottoms that wont sink.

You can try tying the plants to suction cups, uncovering some of the bottom of the tank, and sticking it to the base. Or buy some really big rocks, on ebay or something and using them instead!

Or take some fishing line, and tie them around your log.

For my plants like that, with the boats at the bottom, I got the aquarium-safe silicone glue/sealant and actually glued the pebbles in. They're weighted down, AND can't be vacuumed and eaten!

I rearranged things in the tank, took the 2 annoying floating plants out (for now) and installed a new air pump with 2 outlets. So, if you're wondering what that grey thing is, its a little space ship thats meant to bob up and down in the water while releasing air, but it got stuck on a plant, and thats the way Gem seems to like it; not moving much. :D
Can you spot her in the pics of the tank? :p

I noticed she was hungry, so I dropped some food that sank down to what I thought was an awkward spot. Turns out, axi's are very flexible :p

On another note, I'm waiting for my digital camera to come in the mail, so I can take much better pics

Haha I love those last pictures of Jem... they always seem to find the most awkward lays of relaxing. Hehe

Just took a few pics with my mobile phone camera. I hope this digital camera arrives soon so I dont have to keep blinding my poor axi :(

There's a few more pics in the album in my profile and on the photo bucket page

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
