I had hoped I wouldn't have to post here but after one of my children put a bottle of toilet cleaner in our axie tank just after Christmas I've had to say goodbye to 7 of our beautiful axies who either died at the time or from starvation in the following weeks
RIP
Albicant (18 month old Copper)
Fish (16 months old)
Fast (11 month old Wild)
Rukmini (11 months old)
Lemonie (11 months old)
Dillon (3 years old Wild) and
Hoo-Dee-Nee (11 months old Melanoid)

Chrysta, Leopard and Violet are still clinging to life but are refusing to eat. I've had to resort to force feeding but I'm not sure how much more they and I can take :(

I know many will look at these happy pictures and wonder 'why has such a sad thing happened' and even try and unravel the mystery. But in fairness I think this thread demonstrates something far more important and that's the deep devotion and affection for our tank mates. Something overlooked at times in a place so devoted to knowledge.

I clicked on this out of curiosity and honestly I think it's a fantastic Idea.
For those without pictures it's no different. Coming here to pay homage to a friend who brought joy, for however long is a wonderful Idea.

I had a lemon goldfish called Melisande (Mel for short) Named after my favorite movie. I had her for years and was one of the first fish I ever had as a kid. I did everything from setting up the tank to waiting weeks for it to cycle (being a novice and an impatient one that was the hardest part) to picking her from the shop and settling her in. When she grew ill I'd have done anything to cure her but alas it was not to be.

I know she wasn't an Axolotl but I honestly share the sentiments of those who have lost friends.

 "Gone but never forgotten"

RIP Romeo.....
Brother to Tarquin, lover to Annie and friend/bully to Pinky. Just stopped eating and died a very slender axie indeed :(

The first three pictures show him when he first moved in, the last picture was taken two weeks before his death :(

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
