I was looking to update some of my posts with some more up to date photo's, and realised I hadn't introduced my little efts.
I received four of these, bred and raised by Morg early September 2011.
The first two pictures are of them when they arrived, they where placed in a small critter keeper. This has a layer of leaf litter, moss and some broken clay plant plot. There is also a small water bowl which they randomly wallow in. When they seem to be lurking in there I have added some chopped blackworm, which they will eat. They have been fed small worms, greenfly, tiny wax worm, small woodlice and lots of white worm and springtails. I don't hand feed them as they would run for cover as soon as their lid was taken off. Lately though a couple have stayed put and happily tuck into what ever is being added into their home.
The last two pictures where taken recently. I was convinced they hadn't grown at all, but it seems they have.
The colours do seem to change slightly from time to time, currently two seem darker. Occasionally one will seem much darker than the others.

I got 6 of them from Morg as well. Mine are quite bold though, they tend to come over when I open the lid. They vary in colour from orangey brown to beigey brown. I noticed yesterday one is very definitely going green. I'm going to upgrade them at some point in the newt couple of weeks to ammuch bigger tank with a small water area.

I dont hand feed mine either though. The food goes in and they hunt for it. They mainly eat fruitflies, tiny crickets, spring tails and bloodworm.

Mine appear to have morphed very very quickly, I was expecting it to take at least a year. I dont have the central heating on or anything so I wonder if thats speeded it up?

Aw :) very cute. I love notos. One of them seems to be developing some nice reddish spots :)

Mine are now uniformly olive green, although I'm not sure if they all made it. I can see 3 but not sure if the others are just hidden. Tomorrow I'm going to move them to a semi aquatic set up and see what they make of it :D

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
