It looks very nice, but I would recommend you a bigger land area, and more hiding spots. My shanjing don't enter the water often, but they prefer to sit on the wood that is half in the water.

Good luck with you animals :)

As Jari B said, Shanjing are much more of a land subspecies of Tylototriton rather than ones for going in the water a lot lol. But it looks good, well done :) I would make the water area a bit deeper personally though maybe 5 inches, in my opinion :)

Just finished getting my newts tomorrow, 55gal Tetra Fauna Viquarium setup 70/30 (Land/Water) live plants, plenty of hides. Layered gravel eco earth substrate topped off with moss. Water is 3inch in dept lots of filtration.

I hope that the information in the PM's gave you a good idea how I keep my T. shanjing. If you have any more questions I would like to try and answer them from my opinion and personal observations.

Could you let me know where you ordered the newts from? I'm considering North American sources for Tylototriton.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
