Hi,

Finally my fat fire salamanda started giving birth last night. I've had these for 2 years now and every day she has looked ready to pop. I got in from work last night and was feeding my other newts and they were the last to be fed and there she was, in the water dish with 1 baby. Problem was I think I disturbed her before I noticed.

I was deverstated to have disturbed her, especially after over a year of waiting. I removed the youngster and left her to it.

I have placed the baby in a small tank, 1 - 2 inches of water and a bit of natural weed. Some live blood worm ( I will get some daphnia today ) and no filtration. Is this water depth OK ??????????

The good news is there was another 2 babies there this morning and one still born, she is still on the large side so fingers crossed there will be some more tommorrow.

A quick up date. I've ended up with 5 born live and these are doing well so far. They are growing and eating blood worm, daphnia ( when I can get it ) and brine shrimp.

Both my females still look on the large side though, I am hoping they will not have any more young till the Spring as food will be a lot easier to find.

The saga continues, another 9 live born yesterday. One of them only has front legs but I'm guessing the rear ones will grow ??????

This shows the difference between those born 2 weeks ago and those from yesterday. I am a bit worried about canabalism but I think the new borns are just big enough. Any more born after today will need another set up.

Both femeles are still on the very large side so i'm expecting this family to increase again.

Fire Salamanda's "The pet that just keeps giving".

Another 8 this morning, so that takes the total so far upto 28. A few more still born today so I'm wondering if they are coming towards the end of birthing.

I kind of hope so as it's very hard to get daphnia this time of year.
