Gravel impaction seems to occur when people feed axolotls pellets onto gravel , if you are tong feeding it may not be an issue. I know a couple of people who do this with no problems, I personally prefer sand as I use pellets, though they are fed onto feeding dishes in the tanks to avoid sand consumption. Nice gills on those guys, what temp do you keep them at and do you use an airator or filter?

I already thought it and made this once before, but I used less sand that I needed and all the sand was mixed with other substrate

So the next time I will take out some part of this substrate that I'm using right now and after that, I will put the sand

Hi Nai Live,

I do not offer pellets for them because here in Brazil we don't have an axolotl's feed, as we have for fish, for example

I can offer fish food, but I prefer feed them with shrimp and tubifex, but sometimes I give some worms and little fishies too.
And all these foods I spit on a stick, so they does not eat this substrate when I feed them.

Ah ! And about the temperature, I keep them in a middle of 23 C.
In the half of the year is winter time here in Brazil, so the temperature falls a lot, until 13 C in their tank, but summer is very intensive too and the water can be around 28 C, so in the warmer days I move them to a Styrofoam box with plenty of plants, aquarium water and ice.
It is not as difficul as it sounds and they look good, because my room is the coldest part of the house

I use in this tank 3 filters, 2 submersible biologics pumps and an external filter with activated charcoal (sorry but I do not know how is called these filters in english).

Sometimes I use, but I do not like the flash because it scares them, so I'd prefer enjoy the aquarium light.

And for the aquarium light does not stay as strong on them, and give an effect of light and shade, I put some dark cloth underneath the aquarium bulbs.

Even if you hand-feed, axolotls are rooters by nature. They will snuffle through the substrate looking for food, even when it's not 'feeding time'.

By now, I'm sure you've noticed why they're called Ambystoma (or 'cup mouth'): they suck their food in like a vacuum cleaner. If they find something they think might be food (like poop), they'll happily suck that in, along with any surrounding substrate.

Hand-feeding is not a valid argument against poorly sized substrate.

Tank look lovely

Concerned those pebbles still look like they are smaller than those heads 0.0
The river rocks I've seen used are even larger than the new ones in your tank..
Perhaps others can confirm if they could still possibly pose a danger.

Yes, in my opinion some of those stones seem too small to put in the tank. Get rid of anything that's smaller than/almost the same size as an axie's head

I think that is because maybe you are only seeing the picture of tank ... The tank has 300 Liters, and all the stones has about more or less, the size of an Axie's head, as the last picture shows ... It's impossible that my axolotl can eat a stone like that.

Look at the last picture and compare the size of the mouth of my axolotl to the size of the stone.

Is there such a risk in your opinion?

In my opinion, yes.
I'm not saying they WILL swallow them, but there is always a possibility that they could.

I agree that the stones still cause a risk of accidental consumption ...as you can see by the photo that Tephra has kindly added. I would also be concerned about the waste that will also become trapped among the stones.

That is so bad !

By now it is all ok, as I said, I always feed them directly in their mouths with a stick, but I know that all you said me that this will not garantee that they doesn't eat the stones...

So I will have to put some larger stones over these...

About the waste, I'm not concerned because I use a submerse bomb with the biological filter under the stones, and I also siphon the floor.
