Hi ya'll,

I'm T for short. I live in Australia and am a new Axolotl owner :) I joined up because I have 2 pet Ax's called Zelda and Desmond and of all the sites I've seen and read I found this one to be the most accurate, and by far, the most friendly site so far. :)

Zelda's a cream coloured albino Axolotl with gold speckles on her body and ruby eyes *no joke her eyes are red* and Desmond is what you would class a wild type Axolotl with golden spots through his body and tail with black eyes and no rings on them. Neither have rings around their eyes, they are Both were brought from a shop around 3 months ago and had been in apparent fights because they were missing their feet and hands. They're, I would hazard a guess of, about 6-7 months old. Never fight with each other and actually on the odd occasion stand on one another haha They're in an approximate tank of 100 L tank with some sea snails and 2 guppies. The guppies don't bite them and in fact my Ax's go to bite THEM. The snails don't get bitten either and eat the food my babies don't eat.

Anyway that's my spill and Ill see ya'll on the boards here some times :)
Bye bye!

Welcome T :)

I'm a fellow Aussie - there's a few of us here :-| lol

Please post pics of your lotls & tank - it's always nice to meet new faces ;)
If your axolotl has no shiny ring then it would be a melanoid not a wild type as the distinguishing characteristic of a wild type is the shiny ring - it's ok I'm still learning & still trying to work out 2 of my lotls as their eyes are hard to read lol

What type of snails do you have in the tank as some varieties especially the larger snails can actually be dangerous - either by swallowing or trapping axolotls limbs when the snail closes it's foot. Sea snails are not freshwater so not likely to be thriving in with an axolotl. Also, if you are attached to your guppies & don't want them eaten - remove them & get them their own tank :) if your happy for them to become lunch then leave them in & expect to find the numbers drop.

What foods do you feed them & how long are they? Depending on how they were raised age doesn't always determine size - I have a few the same age (siblings) & they vary greatly in size.

Once again welcome & enjoy :)

Thanks for the welcome :)

Ill take some happy snaps in a few moments. The snails are just pond snails but don't seem to disturb my Axolotl's what so ever. Ill take shorts of them too :) The snails will be moved into a bigger koi pond when they are big enough. My babies dont even eat the snail eggs or bite at the snails. What's the difference between a Melanoid to a wild type? I actually don't like the guppies being in the tank but the onle other tank for them to go into is my Yabbie tank and let's face it the yabbies will eat them hahaha So if my Ax's eat them I don't mind.

Zelda and Desmond aren't siblings but they were from the same tank and same pet shop I got them from. They're at about 3-4 inches now but when my partner bought them they were about 1 1/2 to 2 inches. I feed them Axolotl pellets from a city farmers and I feed them frozen shrimp when they won't eat their pellets. I have tried tinned crickets but neither of my babies ate them and they tend to stay away from wherever the crickets are. So I assumed they weren't to their taste and are happy munching on their pellet or shrimp. I don't know where to get bloodworms from or I would have tried them by now. There's not a lot of stuff in their tank currently but I'm hoping to place live plants or even just some simple ornaments for them to climb through or go into to hide :) They seem to go off food when it's always the same and enjoy hand feeding because they don't have to fight the guppies for the food.

I water change them every week or every 2nd week depending on the amount of dirt in their tank. :) They like to sit up the top of the tank from time to time and seem to be inseparable from one another. They do what I call Guard changes when they eat shrimp. One will stand guard and bite at the guppies to scare them from the other one when the other is eating and then they swap and the cycle continues. Any suggestions as to what else I could do as a beginner would be great because I'm already really attached to Zelda and Desmond so I want them to have the best life possible. :)

Thanks for reading :)
T!

These are my babies. The creamy white one is Zelda and the black speckles one is Desmond :)
