We picked up a couple of A. tigrinum today! The female is about 2 years old and very active, she's busy exploring her temporary viv. The boy is under a year (we think) and went straight for his hide and won't come out.
We are quire excited about venturing into terrestrial salamanders, we've done all our research but we know there will be quite a lot of hand on learning as well.

Here's the girl:

Very nice! Do you plan to attempt breeding in the future?

Stuart

Congrats! They're a great species! I still get upset when I think of my A.mavortium who died last year of a unknown skin infection. Yours look beautiful! Maybe you'll start getting other terrestrial (or semi-aquatic) caudates!

Awesome Auntiejude! I knew this day would come, when you finally give in and get something other than axies ;) A good species to start with, too.
Best of luck!

Well if they do breed, and it's a big IF I'll be very lucky! I will certainly give them the opportunity.

(Seth - I also have 2 A.andersoni as well as the 15 A. mexicanum and now 2 A. tigrinum!)

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
