So I got my (first and only so far) axolotl a year and some months ago at the insistence of my then six year old daughter after seeing pictures online. We did some cursory research and decided that it would be doable in terms of this strange cute little animals requirements. Needless to say we are now hooked. I have to confess that I've been mining this site as much as possible this whole time and only just now decided to join the community. Well, there's our story so far though we may be looking into finding a buddy for our awesome pet.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
