Hello All,

Im new to this site so I hope im abiding by all the rules.

I have (what I believ to be) ribbed newts.
They used to be in my cold water fish tank until one was attacked by a loach and managed to rip his leg off  This has now 75% grown back and I was quite impressed.

The issue now is that he/she has suddenly became bloated and is struggling to get around its tank.

No substrate, has fake plants, no air bubbles from the pump, being fed on a mix of frozen blood woms and frozen shrimp. Has been eating fine with no problems, pooing regular and looked quite happy.

I dont know what to do

Please Help

Ive tried to attach pictures of the bloated guy and setup, hope its worked.

Yes it's Pleurodeles waltl. For the bloat check this: Caudata Culture Articles: Bloat

The diet you're giving your newt really isn't fully nourishing. Live food is way better than dried food items. Earth worms are your number one choice available in the hobby. If you only have one newt it really shouldn't be a problem to gather enough, because one large worm a week should be enough.

Check for a nice list of suitable food items: Caudata Culture Articles - Food Items for Captive Caudates

I can really recommend live plants as well, especially Eleodea. Pump or air pump aren't needed indeed, but some plants can keep your water in balance for a long time.

Thanks for your reply Niels.

Looking at the bloat link you sent, I would say its more towards the egg carrying but if it stops swimming it floats to the top. How can I be sure? So I dont need to have the pump/filter in the tank and you would say to get rid of the fake plants and put in real ones.

With no pump/filter and currently 2 newts in a 2 foot tank how ofter and how much water should I be changing?

Thanks in advance.

Iv'e had fantail goldfish that if they swallow air while feeding from the top, float.. just a mention in case it is something very simple. worms are a good idea, and if you have a compost heap very easy to collect

Thanks for the reply.
No compost heap unfortunately, might lay down some board and see if the worms turn up.
Quite sad chopping them up tho lol.

I gave the tank a good clean out yesterday and it seemed to be a little less floaty.

See how it is when I get in from work.
