Shanjing tank jungle look

Some of you have seen these guys here before..and saw the tank back in January.

Here's a more recent pic of the animals and the tank. Both shanjing are doing very well and have been eating like fiends.

I think the tank looks really good and it's now pretty much maintaining itself save for a daily sprinkling. I added moss, spider plants and some duckweed a few weeks after it was set up. I'm a sucker for natural tanks. I just can't do the plastic tub and paper towels, although it sure would be easier.

There's a pic of the tank when it was first unveiled at caudata culture for those interested in comparing.

What a BEAUTIFUL tank! I'm envious of your shanjings - I want to live in there, too!

I ripped off a picture of this same tank today...almost three years on. Not the best shot sadly...I didn't turn the main room light on so it looks dark. The tank is not quite as pretty as it was ...but it actually still looks pretty good in full light. When comparing, I see the ferns and spider plants didn't survive.Too little light? But the hoya (?) ficus and pothos are still going great guns. There are some other plants in there as well...most bought at Wal Mart for a $1.50.I usually do the "gardening" every 4 months or so. The moss in in rough shape, but I'll replace that in the spring when there isn't 4 feet of snow on the ground. Both shanjing are in great shape and have proven to be very healthy after their initial bumpy ride a few years back.

They would gladly eat from my fingers, which I don't like to do by the way. I've tried to let them retain whatever "wildness" is left. They are much less light shy these days, although the pothos usually screens the direct light. The tank was just watered and looks wet..but it dries out quickly. These two are REALLY water shy and don't like a soaked tank at all. They almost never go in the water side.

It's great to see a follow-up on a tank setup 3 years later. We so often see brand-new setups and it's hard to predict how long they will look good. Your setup and your newts are doing great!

I have a basement studio...it stays cool..even in the summer. Looking at this latest pic..I realize my moss has mostly died as has the fern..but I've added a another ficus in the place of the fern that's doing great. I will replace the moss soon.

Both shanjing continue to do well by the way, although they refuse to breed.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
