Nitrate Spike

My nitrates spiked due to a large amount of poop that was hidden inside my tank. Ammonia 0, nitrite 0 (tested this morning). I know that water changes are recommended to reduce nitrate levels. Out if curiosity, how long is it expected to take to get nitrates down from say 40 to 10ppm if I do daily water changes? I know this might be a broad question so please bear with me. Also, should I tub my axie till I get the situation under control? She's swimming frantically and won't eat. Temperature is 60° F

You mean nitrates? Also, I did a 50% water change earlier and the levels went from like 40-60 to 20-30 (hard to tell, dang vials)
 
Yeah I meant Nitrites, nitrates were up too but not as bad. Not exactly the same problem you wee having but I thought it would give a little context.

I see I see. Anyway, I think the high nitrates are reducing her appetite cause she's completely stopped eating. She used to eat one worm every single day, and had an amazing food response. Its been about 4 days since she ate and she runs away from every piece of worm I try to feed her. Kinda worries me :/ I'm doing my best to lower the nitrates with regular water changes but I just hope I can get control of the situation quick enough cause I'm starting to notice a difference in her weight.

    Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

    Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
