Just found one of my Emperor Newts (tylotrotiton shanjing) has an extra arm! It is fully formed just smaller than the main one. It seems to be moving. I thought it was an unabsorbed gill until it was up against the glass today. Check out the pics! I'll try to get some better ones and keep you all posted on how it grows, or if it falls off. Is there anything you think I need to do? This batch hatched in June and all but 1 or 2 are morphed now (total of 10). He (she) seems happy and healthy and is one of the bigger ones.

I’ve seen this happen with Triturus. It’s a glitch in their healing process. When a limb gets (badly) torn or lost completely, the body's cells may get "confused". A new growth hub (blastema) forms right at the wound site while the original leg is still there. This accidental trigger tricks the salamander's body into growing an extra leg right next to the injured one.
