    Glowing Axolotl

    Glowing Axolotl

Your axolotl is gfp. The axolotl line it was bred from had green fluorescent protein from a jellyfish spliced in them at one time. GFP is now transferred genetically through breeding. The flourescence responds to ultraviolet light. Since daylight and daylight bulbs have ultraviolet as a...

    Black fungus on axolotl

It looks like it might be normal pigment. I wouldn't worry but keep an eye on it. If a lot of red skin or fuzzy fungus shows up I would think of medicating.

Possible Sick Axo, or am I Overreacting?

I add abut a tablespoon of aquarium salt per 10 gallons of water. Rock salt and solar salt are basically the same as aquarium salt. Marine salt for salt water fish is good too. Lately I just use the Morton (Tm) solar salt in the blue bag.

Possible Sick Axo, or am I Overreacting?

I've never used anything like seachem stability or chemicals to quick start a tank. I have used filter material from other tanks to quick start a tank. My concern is that by tubing axolotls and medicating axolotls when they might not need it you can possible harm the axolotl. It is tougher...

Possible Sick Axo, or am I Overreacting?

I'd throw them in the big tank asap. Even if it is not cycled you should be able to maintain water quality better than in a small tub. Add aquarium salt, rock salt, or hoftretters solution to the tank. Throw in a couple dried oak leaves to help fight fungus and help with cycling. Do a 20...

    Do pellets cause impaction?

The Ambystoma Genetic Stock Center at the University of Kentucky uses and recommends Rangen brand soft moist salmon pellets. That is also what I recommend and use for my axolotls and some of my other salamanders and aquatic frogs. I am currently not selling or shipping anything due to the...

    Do pellets cause impaction?

Hard pellets can swell up inside the digestive tract of salamanders and cause impaction. This can be avoided by using soft moist pellets or pre soaking hard pellets. The big problem is when a bunch of hard pellets are eaten at once.

I currently have a 3 year old axolotl, he hasn't been eating for the past couple of weeks and has lost a lot of weight. Hedwig usually eats bloodworms and earthworms just fine but now he won't even stud it. I've done a water change to make his nitrate lower and his water is at a good temperature
