For the experts - Andersoni or Mexicanum

I bought these 4 caudates at a high price in good faith from a VERY reputable UK dealer - http://www.caudata.org/forum/members/lefarge-albums-ambystoma-andersoni-anderson-s-salamanders.html They are German CB, apparently. As you can see the pics chart their growth from juvies to subadults...

    Keeping Marbled Newts aquatically?

I have read that this can be done and that they can happily adapt to water the same as Alpine newts... BUT... just out of interest has anyone ever actually done it? Please note I'm not asking if you SHOULD, so please don't hijack the thread saying "you must keep them terrestrial most of the...

    Help with Newt ID

I just bought 5 of these little guys from a local pet shop - http://www.caudata.org/forum/members/lefarge-albums-mystery-newts.html they're skinny but active and I'm going to feed them up and see how they do the shop, which is well-intentioned but not big on fact is selling them as 'French...

    African Clawed Frog

Can anyone recommend a supplier/breeder for an African Clawed/Xenopus frog? I don't want a dwarf one but would ideally like a young one that will grow... and a dark one not albino/gold

Spanish Ribbed Newts - heads always out of water - help!

Hi Guys... I have 3 juvie Spanish Ribbed Newts from forum member Morg -- healthy, eating and pooing fine. I have two questions - 1. They swim a lot. A LOT. Is this normal? 2. Last few days they have all had their heads out of water as much as possible. Water parameters are fine... but what...

    Puck and Elvira

These are our two original axies, both purchased last year... Puck (leucistic) my girlfriend bought me as a surprise present... and Elvira followed a few months later... now we have 12 herps! We are eagerly awaiting Puck to 'become a man' - Elvira is a bit older and has laid eggs once at the pet...

    Bright Light?

Obviously we all know that axies are really Gremlins so shouldn't be fed after midnight either BUT why don't they like bright light? Does it hurt their eyes? Burn their skin? Always trying to learn and couldn't figure this out!

    Where in London

Something I'm curious about and that might help the many lurkers who are planning to purchase an axie... When it comes to axies and amphibians in general London is for once not the right place to be... the North seems much better served for caudates... so can anyone recommend any good stores or...

    Why earthworms?

This might seem like a daft question, but... why earthworms? What exactly is it that makes them the best staple diet for axolotls? I am not disputing that they are the best, but like Alice I'm impossibly curious. It seems pretty obvious that earthworms aren't the staple diet of wild axolotls...

    Treats?

What do more experienced Pleurodeles keepers recommend as treat foods for Spanish Ribbed Newts? I have an amazingly personable baby only about 2" long - currently loving chopped earthworms. Bought him from Forum member Morg and love him to bits (I say him, too young to tell)

    Axies at London Zoo

There are two axolotl set ups at London Zoo - the one with the BIG wild types in the bug house... and then two little colourful ones (albeit a bit chewed) in the reptile sanctuary... anyone know what type these latter two are?

    Andersoni/Mexicanum - differences

We've noticed our Andersoni are very different to our axies - much more aggressive feeders, they sit up on their back legs a lot and they like to be higher than the ground level when possible... I have read some views that in the wild the primary difference is simply location (ie two different...

    Two New Ambystoma Andersoni

Our two new puppies arrived this morning, two beautiful Andersons. They don't seem to be very widely kept and we were thinking about starting a blog of some kind charting our progress with them.. would anyone be interested in that? They are tiny, barely 10cm - pic attached

    Blotches AND constant swimming

    * Hi Guys We’re a bit stumped on one of our axies and could do with some help. We bought our melanoid Elvira from the reptile shop in Camden about 3 weeks ago. She was in a tank with two REALLY big wild type axies and the shop was very warm. She was decidedly sluggish, just sat...

    Very new axie keepers

My girlfriend and I are fairly new Axolotl owners... she bought me our first one, a leucistic called Puck as a surprise present. More recently we got a black female called Elvira (a bit bigger and older). Puck is VERY sociable, like an enthusiastic teenager, swimming around, always hungry...

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
