    Captive Amphibian Sustainable Populations

Inspired by a recent discussion about creating a sustainable captive population of amphibians I thought I would make this. It may never work, but at least I'm trying! The idea being that members post what they are breeding and what they are keeping so that if we are looking to freshen the...

    T. Cristatus UK guidelines for captive (CB) animals

I have a breeding group of adults of T. Cristatus originally from Charles Snell's group. They will probably end up laying a lot of eggs of which I will raise a lot of larvae. What I'd like to know, is, if I wanted to sell a small number of juveniles later this year or early next year what do I...

    What is this???

Inspired by Morg's albino T.cristatus thread I thought I'd make this; I know what these are (sort of!) but I'm interested to see what other forum members make of it. Anybody that I have spoken to about this is not allowed to say!! They are obviously Triturus sp, so no points for guessing that...

    Notophthalmus viridescens piaropicola

I will be getting some CB juvenile N.v.piarpicola/Peninsula Newts next week. I know how to care for them etc, but I'd like to hear about people's experience with this species. My understanding is that they don't have the red eft stage like other subspecies, and are almost entirely aquatic.

    Shipping gravid newts

Is shipping gravid newts a bad idea? In this situation they can spend up to 5 days in shipping (3-5 is normal). I was under the impression that if the newts couldn't find somewhere suitable to lay eggs they can just expel them or reabsorb them? The females have just started laying yesterday...

    Raising Triturus juveniles aquatic

This post is regarding newts of the genus Triturus. I know a lot of people raise Triturus sp. aquatic as juveniles which seems to work very well. My question is, does temperature affect development as juveniles? I assume it would as it does in other stages. Most of the time when Triturus are...

    Ichthyosaura alpestris inexpectatus

Most of you will be aware now that I am completely obsessed with alpine newts, and I just have to show off my Ichthyosaura alpestris inexpectatus adult male and female and gilled juveniles. Both adults are neotenic but the male's gills are very small (really just stubs) and I wouldn't be...

    An ever-so-slightly late 'Hello'

Looking through the introductions Forum today it suddenly occurred to me that I have never actually made an introduction post. I've been around for about a year and a half as a member (and a few years more just researching) so a lot of you will know me and know what I keep but also a lot of you...

    Some of my European Species

I thought I'd post pictures of some of my european species (of other amphibians as well as newts). Starting with Salamandra Salamandra Terrestris

    Culturing daphnia outside

I have very nearly been successful in culturing daphnia inside using spirulina powder and yeast however I always seem to end up over feeding or something just goes wrong! So now, considering its nearly March, I figure I can probably start culturing daphnia outside. I have acces to these...

    Facebook group

A new facebook group for newts specifically of the genus triturus, and former triturus european species (like ichthyosaura and lissotriton); https://www.facebook.com/groups/897954733559904/

    Raising larvae

In the near future I will be getting eggs of some pretty cool crested newts (specifically Macedonicus, Dobrogicus, karelinii). I'll be getting about a dozen-fifteen eggs and I really want to get this right. So, I know there are lots of great care sheets etc. out there but I would really like to...

    Triturus Dobrogicus

I had some new newts (and toads) arrive yesterday so I thought I would share some pictures of them. These are T.dobrogicus, I'm really impressed with them and the male already has a small crest, I have high hopes for them! I also got some larvae/neotenes of I.a.inexpectatus which I'll add...

    My Alpine Newts

Well, I thought my alpine newts were looking particularly nice today so I spent a good while taking photographs this evening. The males are not in breeding condition but they are looking very bright.

Does anybody keep uncommon Alpine newts (Ichthyosaura alpestris alpestris)

I'm wondering if anybody keeps alpine subspecies other than alpestris and apuanus. In the UK especially, I've only heard of breedings of alpestris, reiseri and apuanus recently. I've heard of inexpectatus and veluchiensis being bred in the past but nothing recently. So, what I'm asking is, is...

    Origins of Leucistic Pleurodeles Waltl

I've done quite a few searches on here and the general internet, and I can't seem to find much information on the origins of leucistic P.waltl. So, I'm wondering, where do leucistic Pleurodeles Waltl come from? Are they naturally occurring in the wild or did they come from breedings in...

How many eggs do Hyla Arborea lay?

So, I'm a bit confused, I've read lots of articles on this species and almost all of them say they lay 800-2,000 eggs. But then I spoke to someone who has bred them in the past and he says his only ever laid 2/300. Can anybody enlighten me? Does anyone keep these? Thanks, Stuart

    Breeding fire salamanders (S.s.terrestris)

Well, as expected the gravid female S.s.terrestris has started depositing larvae! So far there's two and there was also one unfertilised egg. She's still spending quite a lot of time in the water dish in the evening. I'm looking forward to having more larvae, I have a question though. I won't be...

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
