    Neotenic Laotriton?

Still living its best life as a larvae, 5-6 months after everyone else metamorphosed

    Neotenic Laotriton?

Aah ok so probably not neotenic then; just thought it was neat seeing how long it’s taken so far. There was one surprise larvae that was living with the adults so maybe this is that one (hatched a bit later than every one else). Then again, none of the larvae got this size 🤷‍♂️. I’ll post some...

    Neotenic Laotriton?

Have you guys ever had/heard of neotenic Laotriton? Most of my larvae metamorphosed 2-3 months ago and this one is still living its best life aquatically. It’s also getting decently big at 2.5-3 inches (~6-7.5 cm), which is way bigger than the other larvae when they morphed.

Oh, I meant to say my cereal bag was from Cinnamon Toast Crunch if that matters 😜

Nobody can say no to Cheerios

I want to second this method as well; hopefully it will lead to more success with Laotriton breeding/rearing in the states. I tried it this past season with my Laotriton and it helped me spot eggs quicker than the Java fern they laid eggs on. There even seemed to be a slight preference for the...

    Tylototriton verrucosus “dark variant” breeding

I didn’t get any white larvae this year, but I did get this one stunner that looks similar to the brightly colored individual from last year (that didn’t end up surviving). It morphed out at 4 inches (10 cm)!! Most of the metamorphs look similar to the parents, more muted orange and no spots...

    Tylototriton verrucosus “dark variant” breeding

The larvae have been morphing over the past few weeks and finally the white/lighter larvae did too. Although it’s not as light as I thought it would be, it’s still a stunner with bright yellow eyes. I included it with some other morphed individuals so you could see the contrast between them.

Paramesotriton sp. ID + any current breedings?

I was going through childhood photos and came across a photo I took of my Paramesotriton that I only had for a week or two before it died (and 9 year old me didn’t think of taking a photo of it until after it had died). Anyways, I was curious if anyone had any idea of what species it could have...

    Tylototriton verrucosus “dark variant” breeding

I’ve been meaning to update y’all with the progress. Here are some of the larvae from a few weeks/months ago. I’m still waiting for the white one to morph. John said he’s raised these before and they come out orange. Does anyone have a pic of a morphed lighter individual?

    Tylototriton verrucosus “dark variant” breeding

So I've only had about 20% of the larvae hatch. Some seem to hatch prematurely and are deformed that eventually don't make it. Has anyone had this issue before with this species or with Tylototriton in general? The big female has gone on to lay two more clutches, the second of which is starting...

    Tylototriton verrucosus “dark variant” breeding

Thanks! Ha, the adults aren’t any better. I have to referee feeding time 😂

Ouachita Mtns Salamanders - March 2015

I realized it has been a while since I've posted. This is my favorite trip of the past year. I dragged my significant other along and drove 17 hours out to the Ouachita Mtns to find some rare salamander species I only dreamed about seeing and did decently well! We traveled out at the end of...

The rest of my salamanders in 2014 (PA, NC, GA, TN)

As the weather is starting to warm and inevitably more salamander pictures will be taken, I figured I'd clear out some of the older pictures I haven't posted yet. I'll start with the ones that I have taken most recently. This first group is from central Pennsylvania at a Wildlife Management...

    Pseudoeurycea bellii

I'm sure someone else will post this, but I recently saw some Pseudoeurycea bellii available on fauna classifieds. Does anyone know if they are legit CB? They seem to be pretty rare in the pet trade and was curious if anyone knows of breeding going on outside of zoos. I've found some great...

    Piebald salamanders

Hey all. I wanted to collectively pick your guys' brains to see if anyone has seen piebald salamanders in the wild. I've seen some weird color variants of red-backed salamanders and heard of people that have seen leucistic or albino individuals. Has anyone else seen anything out of the ordinary?

    "Clemson" variant of Plethodon metcalfi

I was curious if anyone has come across these recently? I can only seem to find old references to them and I thought I remembered reading somewhere that a decent chunk of their range was flooded to build a dam or lake front property. Does anyone find these anymore? Here are some examples...

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
