The Genus Salamandra by Philip Gerhardt and Uwe Seidel.

Ok, i really like Salamandra and i really like this book, so when a very nice, friendly, german giant asked me to say a few words about his very nice book, i could hardly say no. Allow me to fetch a foulard and a pair of hipster glasses and go full pretentious reviewer on you: It's no mean feat...

    Family pictures..aaaawwww

I recently realised that it's been years and years since i last dedicated a thread to my wonderful H.orientalis, and that's a wrong that could not be left unrighted. And what a great time to dedicate them a thread, too, since there are now multiple generations of them and they are all doing...

    Autumn glory.

I love autumn...and more than anything, i love temperate forests in autumn, so i'm really happy that i got to visit a particularly gorgeous one this weekend, but as much as i enjoyed walking through such a beautiful setting, the best part was that this time i actually found some adult...

    Domestic axies need a name!

As most people around this forum already know thanks to the educational value and information content of this forums, domestic axolotls are the result of an hybridisation event as well as pretty intense selective breeding. In short, what exists in captivity is a domestic population which is not...

    Fluorescent earthworms.

I bought worms yesterday from the usual place and right now i was doing the feeding rounds for my critters. When i opened the worm box i noticed the worms were looking unusually greenish and when i grabbed one with the tweezers what used to be yellow exudate, was now bright green stuff. Then i...

Why current breeding practices are a failure.

Some of you might already know that i oppose the breeding practices that dominate our hobby and that i have tried in the past to explain why they are a failure in the long term and furthermore, why they are inmoral. I thought i should try to be a bit more pro-active about it and make a post...

    We destroy everything...

There is this beautiful place that has become my favourite spot to visit, with at the very least 9 species of amphibians, including T.marmoratus, L.helveticus, I.alpestris and S.salamandra. Well, on our way to a short vacation in the north, while my parents had a coffee i took the opportunity to...

    My annual herping fix!

We´ve been having a monsoon season which looks like will get worse in the next few days. I really thought i would not get to go herping because of the really bad weather. However, we took a chance this afternoon just in case we got lucky (and just in case we can´t go out of the house for the...

    I´ve been a bad caudatophile.

I´ve recently been coerced into adding a new hobby to my hobby. I feel shame and disgust at myself for having occupied space in my house with something that doesn´t have vertebrae or permeable skin, but at least the new inhabitants of my wee zoo are cool. ANTS! I´m now the proud owner of three...

    We are officially pop culture!

I just watched the first episode of the new season of Being Human (UK version) and there´s a newt enthusiast (or should i say an herpetologically challenged individual). They know we exist now...they know we are out there... Unfortunately, as well as putting us in the category of "phenomena that...

    S.s.gallaica or S.s.bejarae?

Ok, i feel really dumb for having to ask this question but i´m genuinely confused. The S.salamandra populations of the central-north part of Spain, below the Cantabrian mountains have typically been called S.s.bejarae. I have seen them refered to as such in plenty of places and have always...

    Perfect day. (PICTURE HEAVY)

The Almighty Pantheon of Caudate Gods has delivered its blessings onto this most unworthy servant! Praised be! Praised be! Some of you might remember me commenting that for some reason i was never really able to find many caudates in my province at all. Well, that´s changed...Bwahahahahahahaa...

    Kinda, sorta about amphibians.

My parents took me to a beautiful village this afternoon, and while they took a stroll, i went herp searching and flower seeking. Not much luck, but i did find some beautiful plant species that i never get tired of seeing, and a beautiful baby Natrix maura. The poor newborn was all defensive...

    Identifying Hypselotriton.

A fellow spanish hobbyists was given a pair of Hypselotriton. She didn´t really want a new species as she is only interested in keeping H.orientalis so she offered them to someone else in exchange of CB orientalis. I offered to take them in, fearing that they might have ended somewhere less...

    Hydrocotyle in flower.

I know this is nothing special or difficult to achieve in any way, but i´m really excited to see my Hydrocotyle plants flowering. All three species, H.leucocephala, H.verticillata and H.vulgaris are flowering at the same time (although H.leucocephala is not pictured because it´s merely a bud...

    I am so weak...(N.kaiseri)

I know i shouldn´t...and i tell myself everyday "No, Rodrigo, don´t do it....you have too many animals for what your circumstances allow as it is".....buuuuuuuuut....they are so pretty xDD I´m now the proud host and servant of a group of 4 juvenile Neurergus kaiseri. I had never seen in person...

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
