    Favourite threads of all time

While the forum was offline, a lot of people said how much they'd miss all the useful information from older threads. Would anyone like to nominate their favourite/ most useful/ most entertaining threads of all time? I think mine is 'Neurergus kaiseri poisoning incident'...

Large lesser waxworms from biscuit-based medium

A couple of months ago, I found that someone had dumped an opened packet of cheap bourbon biscuits in my front garden. Rather than throw them away, I made them into a medium for lesser waxworms by grinding them up in a blender and mixing with honey & glycerine. To my surprise, the resulting...

    Neoteny/paedomorphosis in C. orientalis

Has anyone seen neoteny/paedomorphosis in captive C. orientalis? I have a year old gilled individual that's well over 4 cm. It's had a yellow belly for a couple of months now, but no sign of losing its gills as yet...

    Green Bombina maxima

I've raised B. maxima for quite a while now. Metamorphs usually have four green spots on their back (that disappear as they get older). A few of this year's young have bright green over most of their back, as in the attached picture- I've never seen anything like this before. I had noticed that...

New UK legislation regarding WC European animals

Following European Courts of Justice judgements against the UK, ruling that the UK interpretation of the Habitats & Species directive was incorrect, a new law is being introduced as of 21st August 2007. It's known that WC animals of some Annex IV species (e.g. T. marmoratus) have been imported...

    Neotenous Lissotriton (Triturus) italicus

Not a great photo, I know... This one turned up in a tank I grow plants in- looks like an italicus egg ended up in there by accident. It's a sexually mature female, at one year of age- it produced a small number of (infertile) eggs a few weeks ago. From my previous experience with neotenous &...

    Triturus carnifex spermatophore

It's hard to take a picture of something that's almost completely transparent... but here's a snap of a T. carnifex spermatophore: I've drawn an outline here, if you couldn't make it out in the first picture: It's about 1cm high in total. As I understand it, the actual...

    Limb regrowth in Triturus alpestris

One of my T. alpestris males had his front left leg bitten off in late March last year, and I've taken some photos illustrating the regrowth: Jun 19: Jul 17: Aug 7: Sep 5: When I first discovered his leg was bitten off, the lower leg was missing, and the humerus was...

    Pooters

As I was sucking up some fruitflies in my pooter this morning, I was wondering how I ever managed without it... Does anyone else use one of these to handle small insects? I have a home-made one that I think is better than any I've seen for sale- I'll post details on how to make one, if...

    Feeding times?

I was just wondering what time of day people feed their animals... I usually feed mine first thing in the morning, despite the fact that most of them are nocturnal or crepuscular. Has anyone found that poor feeders will feed better at particular times of day?

    Bloat treatments

Two people have reported bloat in newts in garden ponds in the Reptiles and Amphibians in the UK forum here: http://www.gjscenics.co.uk/forum/forum/display_topic_threads.asp?ForumID=11&TopicID=196&PagePosition=1 This is something I've not had any experience of- I was wondering if anyone here...

    Longevity

Someone mentioned in another thread that newts live for up to 20 years, and it made me think how old some of mine are... The oldest I have are two female alpine newts that are 14 this year (I was given them as larvae in 1989). Can anyone better this? And by the way, there's a list of...

    Photoperiod timing

Kai mentioned using a timer for controlling lighting a couple of days ago. If you're not sure what to set your timer to, here's a website I just found, that will give you sunrise and sunset times for any given location: http://aa.usno.navy.mil/data/docs/RS_OneYear.html This should allow you...

    Newt belly pattern recording

Hi all. With the discussion on the legality of owning captive bred individuals of protected species, I was wondering if anyone was keeping records on individual newts, and particularly recording by belly pattern. Belly patterns have been used to identify individuals of crested newts (T...

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
