Hi everyone,

I’ve had this larval Tiger salamander for about 6 months now and it’s grown from maybe 2-3 inches to 8-10 inches, she is quite big now!

I was trying to find more information on Tiger salamander morphing rates. Right now she shows no signs of morphing and I’m pretty surprised. I actually like the paedomorphic state but I am anxious about how to plan her long term care if I don’t know if she’ll be aquatic or terrestrial

Does anyone have any insights? Is morphing something that is typically expected or induced? Is there a size they usually morph before reaching?

Thanks in advance!

I'm no expert on this subject, especially when it comes to tiger salamanders, but some individuals do seem to take longer and more persuasion than others when it comes to metamorphosis. If she doesn't seem to be changing at all you might try coaxing her a bit by lowering the water level and providing her with some land to crawl onto if you haven't done those two things already. Tiger salamanders are a close relative to axolotls and some of them seem to stay in a paedomorphic state long-term if not given a reason to change. Hopefully, this helps but I don't have much experience with tigers.

90 percent of the time it takes to change depends on which conditions are better so you want to provide with good land areas that way it can make its decision. The question of will it morph is environmental for the most part.
