Abedeer has a swollen mouth

Burrito doesn't look any worse, but not dramatically better either. She had her last injection on Wednesday and we are going to wait a week and have another look then. The vet is wondering whether antibiotics take longer to work in cold blooded animals.

I'm hoping we don't have to resort to surgery as I have literally no idea how I would be able to pay for it.

They may take longer to work in cold blooded animals, especially because the gill circulatory system uses a countercurrent water system, which may take some of the antibiotics with it when it passes the bloodstream. I'm not sure if axolotls have this system, though, since they also have lungs.

I'm not sure axxies can undergo surgery because they'd need to be immersed the entire time, but if your vet says they can, they know best. Does your vet do 'credit' (as in paying later for services rendered) or do they provide PDSA support? (This means that instead of paying the full amount you can try a donation for as much as you can afford; I have no idea if PDSA only applies to domesticated cats and dogs, but it's worth a shot!)

There are some great posts showing pictures of surgery on axolotls who are under anesthetic - interesting with photos showing removal of large stones from gut.

So yes surgery is possible. If you're ever not sure of something when you're answering please be careful mentioning it as sometimes people will follow the first advice they get, which hopefully won't be the wrong direction.. especially important when it's a medical / health based question.

Abedeer seems to be doing fairly well. The swelling in his mouth has gone down so he's eating a little bit, and the sore that popped open is gone completely, but he has a little open wound from it now. His vet appointment is on Tuesday so not too far away now. I live in a fairly large city with only 2 exotic animal vets which is why the wait was so long. I'm still feeling unsure about the visit. He's made it this far though so I feel hopeful.
Tea and salt baths have been a lifesaver I guess

Burrito is looking a bit better. Not completely back to normal yet but definitely less swollen and more active. Her appetite isn't great so I've ordered some wax worms as I've heard they find them irresistable!
I'm sure my vet would let me pay in instalments. I do qualify for help from the PDSA but they don't treat exotics.

A member on here actually had an axolotl who underwent surgery when he was featured on Junior Vet School on CBBC. They keep them wet by pouring water over them throughout the procedure.

Sorry about the premature post Nikki - I have learnt very quickly the value of Googling before I answer! >.< I meant something along the lines of 'how would surgery work?' rather than 'I don't think they can.' Really badly worded - it was a curiosity thing rather than an opinion. I wasn't sure how the axolotl would be kept moist, but Axolotl Newbie cleared that right up!

Glad to hear Burrito is a little better. Sorry I couldn't think of anything better than the PDSA...I wasn't sure whether they would cover exotics or not. Also hope that Abedeer is getting along okay.
