Dear all,

For a provisional period of time (a month), I've just implemented some relatively harmless advertising from Google after coming up blank in terms of interest from relevant third parties - apart from Canadian Feeders. The ads are Google adverts and a good proportion are vaguely related to nature, rather than the really annoying advert types.

I think they're relatively unobtrusive and they are only on a few pages of the site (the axolotl cover page, the main home page and the topics page of the forums, and possibly Caudate Central).

If you find they detract from your experience on this site, I want to know. I deliberately went for something that's not "in your face". Do let me know what you think.

John

I would also like to add that the site doesn't get money from the adverts unless someone clicks on them.

I think they are unobtrusive enough. And your sentence about clicking on the adverts to support the site made it clear what to do :)

Well the ad response is very disappointing. Within a few days of their introduction, hardly anyone was clicking through. Since August 11th when they were implemented the site has a total of $8.79. That's very disappointing, and if that's a monthly total, the site couldn't even pay for its hosting fees - it would fall quite short. There haven't been any donations in that time either.

Therefore, I've decided to remove the adverts. I feel this is a pity because they had the potential to pay for the site's costs.

Why not leave them on? Does it cost caudata anything to have them? If not, then the occasional $10 or so a month is a bonus that otherwise would not be there.

Hi John

Just made my first small donation -long overdue and a bargain for a great resource.

Thanks.

Sorry the advertising didn't work out

I never saw the ad. Either it was too inconspicuous, or else it can be blocked by ad-blocking software.

There's no point in leaving the ads on there if it stops donations. The donations coming in prior to the ads were worth a lot more than the ads.

And thank you Claire.

Just some thoughts.
I have never seen the ad. Where it is? The ad section had no success either during summer for obvious reasons. Well, summer is not the best period of the year, and probably all the people that were willing to donate have done so till next year. Moreover, some things need some time to start working out.
I reckon that caudata could take advantage from both donations and ads.
Best wishes

During the advertising period, there were no (or very few) posts on the forum discussing the need for donations - hence, no donations. The presence of ads and the lack of donations are not necessarily correlated factors.

I was warned by others and I guessed myself that donations would dwindle to nothing while there were adverts on the site. I'm satisfied this was the case. The ads won't be coming back, at least not in the form they're in. That isn't open for debate.

And as for donations, I don't feel it should be necessary for me to constantly appeal for donations.

I never got any pop ups. I think most people just immediatley close any pop ups without looking at what they are. If I had of known about this I would of definatley helped out.

Why not constantly appeal for donations?! Caudata is a great organisation and it sounds like they need all the funding they can get. Anyways do tell us if you do teh geocities thing again!
