Ambystoma laterale

One of four Ambystoma laterale that we saw while out hiking this past saturday in Michigan:

Two were under one log, and two were under another.

Mike, they're pretty prevalent right now, despite how dry it has been. I found a handful on a hike last wednesday. Most were this year's morphs, about an inch and a half long.

Mike, I went out yesterday and managed to find some adult blue spotteds, and lots of morphs. I even found a leopard frog. Yay for rain, huh?

Joan, being new to the area, I was surprised with how common the postmetamorphic A. laterale are. This rain's been great. My wife and I saw a little P. cinereus while we were on a walk this evening. I'm looking forward to getting out again to seem some more.

You're lucky! I was hoping to find a A. maculatum, but they're locally in decline. Hopefully we'll get some good rain soon, and that'll give me a good reason to go out. Flipping logs the other day, we found one with at least 10 little A. laterale under it. One had adults, juveniles, and post-morphs. I got a nice pic of the size contrast. They're like the wood frogs, everywhere! Never seen a tiger in this area. Saw some over on the west side of the state, and down south of Lansing, but never in the Lansing area.
